What Happens At A Studio Newborn Session

When I tell you that photographing studio newborn sessions is one of my absolute favorite sessions to shoot, that is no exaggeration! It is so sweet to be around a fresh little bundle of joy. And also so special to be around families that are so happy to have a new addition. The air is always filled with love and (sometimes chaotic) excitement.

Order of Operations

The most common question I get asked is, “In what order should we do photos?” No need to worry! I take care of all the logistics for you. So just show up to your session relaxed and ready to have fun!

We first do photos of the whole family, making sure that if there are siblings involved, we get them engaged in the beginning so that we can have the best outcome as opposed to them waiting for their turn and getting grumpy. After the whole family we do just sibling photos if there are any. Once siblings are out of the way we do solo baby photos!

I always encourage parents to make a plan so that any older siblings can leave with one parent or another adult after their portion is over, and then the other parent can stay with the baby and relax while the rest of the photos are being taken. I have found that this method makes for the smoothest transitions.

This is the family’s third boy, and the older brothers were absolutely smitten with their new baby brother throughout the whole shoot.

Backdrop Options

For one of my setups I have a bed! So you’re able to have more casual photos as a family, as if they were taken in your own home. This family chose the bed setup so they could all get really cozy with one another. We can also do more formal family and sibling photos with the many other backdrops that I have. It all depends on what you want and how you want the photos to feel. That’s the beauty of having so many backdrop options!

Timeframe

When you take into account the time it takes to change out setups, moving things around and feeding/soothing baby, the whole session from start to finish can take about three hours. Which, as you can see, is why we start with family and sibling photos! Like in the photos above, mom was able to take some one of one shots with baby! Then once big brothers and Dad were done, Mom was able to relax on the couch and hang out while we set up some great individual shots of baby.

We also took this Mama’s maternity photos that you can check out here!

When you’re planning a photo session for you and your partner, my best advice is to make it a date night!  Why Date Night? No one wants to look at their photos and see stiff, awkward poses. While life can be quite awkward sometimes, your photos shouldn’t feel that way. And they certainly shouldn’t feel […]
