Including Extended Family In Your Session

You may only think of getting photos with extended family when you have the occasional family reunion. But after reading this article, hopefully you’ll consider how important it can be to be intentional about having these memories and bonds captured.

Unexpected Bonds

One of my favorite things about taking family photos with extended family is that unexpected bonds seem to be the outcome. Most of the time these are people you do not see very often, so when you take the time to capture moments, that kind of experience can created such special bonds between people.

These photos were taken at Waterfall Glen in Illinois. Bridget and Joey get photos taken every year when I’m in Chicago visiting. They wanted to do a family session and include their youngest daughter’s one-year photos at the same time. Bridget’s dad, sister, and sister-in-law came and they absolutely loved being a part of such a special occasion.

Working with Kathleen over the years, from our first daughter’s newborn pictures, to our maternity photos with our second, and family photos of all of us – every session has been a dream! She’s a total natural and has such an eye for angles, lighting, locations, all of it. We have always felt comfortable and the poses have come easily. Even our shy and feisty toddler loves working with her! The pictures are always beautiful as well, and perfectly capture the moments and phases of life for us to cherish forever. I always look forward to photos with Kathleen (any time I hear she’s coming to town I immediately send her a message and beg her to take pictures for us). I’m proud to be her lifelong client, and to call her a friend!

A Cherished Gift

I know that family photos are often used again as annual holiday cards. There are so many benefits to getting family pictures taken that you can’t put a price tag on the memories that are made! This family used the photos for holiday gifts for everyone this year. Getting photos taken with extended family is a great gift that truly keeps on giving.

So whether you’re having a family reunion or are just looking to create a special set of photos for family you see often, I highly encourage adding your extended family to your session!

When you’re planning a photo session for you and your partner, my best advice is to make it a date night!  Why Date Night? No one wants to look at their photos and see stiff, awkward poses. While life can be quite awkward sometimes, your photos shouldn’t feel that way. And they certainly shouldn’t feel […]
