There are so many different locations in Sacramento for family photo sessions, and the Leland Stanford Mansion is one of the most unique in the downtown area. With stunning architecture and beautiful gardens, there are a multitude of places to get beautiful photos.

This family was so fun to work with and we had the best time roaming the grounds and capturing their life as it really is with their two little girls and their parents. We called ahead of time to make sure we had permission to photograph there (this is ALWAYS necessary for locations on private property), and we loved being able to find all the fun nooks and crannies of this property.

One of the most unique things about photographing at the Leland Stanford Mansion is the different angles that you can use. We started at the top of the stairs for one part of the session, and I captured them as they walked down the stairs. Then I stayed at the top while they wandered down and around the side. This provided an angle that isn’t captured very often for standard family sessions, and it also allowed me to capture the amazing checkered tile pathway. That pathway is an incredibly beautiful and unique backdrop that got to be highlighted in a fun way.

After I finish taking family photos for any session, I always like to get a few photos of the parents by themselves. I truly believe that all parents should do this at the end of photo sessions. It’s important to remember who you are both with and without your kids, and this is a great way to have a few moments to feel like a couple again (even if your little one crashes once or twice).
